U.S. Embassy warns against Colosseum visits

According to Corriere della Sera, the number of visitors to Flavius Amphitheater fell sharply over the weekend

The United States Embassy in Rome advises tourists to “stay away from the Colosseum“, as part of an increased measures plan to prevent possible terrorist attacks, numerous Italian media report.

According to Corriere della Sera newspaper, the exhortation had an immediate effect,as the number of visitors to Flavius Amphitheater fell sharply over the weekend.

Prepaid tickets refunds

Tourist traffic was also sharply reduced amid the surrounding cafes and restaurants in this most popular area of the Eternal City .

At the same time, several travel agents that had prepaid for their clients entrance fees in the famous Roman Empire monument, started refunding money “due to the terrorist threat.”

Italian authorities have announced that they are considering whether these refunds can be legally justified.

Metal detectors

Also, in regard to the safety of tourists visiting the Colosseum, Rome Municipality announced that it will soon install state-of-the-art metal detectors at the monument’s gates, similar to the ones used at the Milan Expo International Exhibition.

Colloseum represents an important income source for the Italian state, since it is visited by over six million tourists each year.
