Telegraph explores where Britons can get the most for their money on holiday this year and includes Corfu in its top 10 best value travel destinations of 2016.
According to the popular newspaper, British holidaymakers are able to benefit from an increase of up to 31 per cent in spending power in numerous resorts and cities worldwide this year, according to figures released by the Post Office.
Portugal’s Algarve region has been revealed as the best value destination for UK tourists in 2016 and Cape Town has overtaken Bali as the best value long-haul destination.
Cost of essential items
The Post Office’s figures on the cost of essential items in popular travel destinations have revealed where tourists can get the most value for their sterling.
The Algarve claimed the top spot for the first time in five years, following a 19 per cent fall in prices.
A close second in terms of value was Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach.
Last year’s best value destination, Prague, slipped to number seven on the list as the rising cost of eating out made the Czech capital almost 14 per cent more expensive. Its close relative and city break rival, Budapest, crept ahead in sixth position.
Falling prices and weak yen
Japan became far more affordable for Britons this year due to a combination of falling prices and the weak yen. Prices in Tokyo have dropped by 18 per cent compared to 2015.
Cape Town was named the best value long-haul destination on the list as a result of sterling striding ahead against the rand, where it is now worth 28 per cent more than a year ago.
The popular Caribbean islands of Antigua and Barbados feature low down in the rankings at 43rd and 41st respectively. This is due to their currencies strengthening to a similar degree as sterling. Prices on the ground in Jamaica saw the biggest rise worldwide, with items in Montego Bay costing more than 30 per cent on last year.
Bali remains in the top eight, however its local prices are on the rise. A glass of wine will cost you £2.65 this year, on average, in comparison with a Cape Town average of £1.45.
Best deals in Europe
Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: “In Europe the best deals are likely to be in Portugal and Bulgaria, where increased competition to attract tourists has resulted in lower prices for tourist staples. Once the exchange rate is factored in, tourists should see their spending costs shrink. For those travelling further afield, Cape Town, Bali and Tokyo look good bets for the bargain-hunter.”
Spain’s Costa Del Sol, Turkey’s Marmaris, Hungary’s Budapest and Czech Republic’s Prague all place in the top 10.
