The 56th Thessaloniki International Film Festival opens on Friday, November 6, with the German drama “Victoria” scheduled to be the first of some 200 films from 53 countries which will be shown, including 77 Greek ones.
The refugee crisis, migration, the financial (and moral) crisis as well as the position of women in society are amongst some of the overall themes explored in this edition of the film festival.
Special screenings
The festival includes 118 long films and 62 short films from 53 countries, special screenings and tributes, as well as special sections such as Open Horizons and Balkan Survey, a concert followed by the screening of the film “Metropolis” by Fritz Lang and accompanied by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.
Distinguished artists in the European independent cinema such as French filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin and Romanian director Mircea Daneliuc will attend the festival.
Greek films
The festival will close with the screening of the film “My Golden Years” by Arnaud Desplechin who is also the honoured director. and will offer a masterclass on Saturday 14 November
As expected, Greek films have a dominant position in the festival. Amongst the Greek films to be shown are Chevalier by Athina Tsangari, Interruption by Giorgos Zois, Invisible by Dimitris Athanitis and Silent by Giorgos Gikapeppas. There will also be a tribute to 70 years of animation in Greece this year.
