Oscar-winning British actress, activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Vanessa Redgrave on Tuesday urged the world to help debt-hit Greece to provide shelter to hundreds of thousands of refugees in search of a better life.
After paying a visit to an open reception centre for refugees and migrants in the Elaionas district of inner city Athens, she praised the humanity shown by the country toward the waves of refugees and other third country nationals landing in the country and said that other governments must also assume responsibility, since Greece was unable to cope with the refugee crisis alone.
Praise to eastern Aegean islanders
Redgrave particularly praised the residents of the eastern Aegean islands and volunteers arriving from all parts of the world to help the refugees, urging people everywhere to exert pressure on their governments for a more positive approach to the refugees issue.
“The Greek people are showing the world how to be human… how to try to help fellow human beings,” Redgrave told reporters.
“Now we’ ve got to tell our governments ‘youve got to step in here. The Greeks can’t solve all the problems in the world and be left to do it on their own. I have a duty to do what I can to speak for the refugees, the asylum-seekers, the families of the world,” added the 78-year-old actress, a life-long advocate of human rights causes who also organized charitable performances in London in order to raise money for refugees.
