Egypt, Turkey, Crete bookings drop in November

Bookings for Egypt's Hurghada airport dropped by 42% compared to November 2014

Bookings for Hurghada dropped by 42% compared to November 2014 as demand for the country slumped following the Russian charter jet crash and subsequent suspension of holidays in Sharm el-Sheikh.

This followed a 30% rise in October and generally strong growth during the year. As a result of the November decline, Hurghada’s market share (of the top ten German destination airports) dropped by six percentage points to 8% and it fell from third to sixth in the ranking, according to monthly figures for the top ten destination airports from leading German holiday reservations provider Traveltainment.

Consumers hold back

Antalya also suffered last month with a 24% fall in German holiday bookings and its market share fell by three percentage points to 26%, although it remained top of the destination airport ranking. In addition, the main Cretan airport of Heraklion saw bookings decline by 23% as consumers held back from Greece holidays.

Bookings for the Canary Islands were also weak compared to the previous year levels, according to the Traveltainment figures. Fuerteventura and Las Palmas both stagnated, Tenerife was down by 5% and Arrecife declined by 4%.

Package holiday bookings

In contrast, Palma benefited with a 4% rise in bookings while the Portuguese island of Madeira entered the top ten ranking with a 3% booking rise compared to November 2014. Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic again increased bookings, this time by 8%, in a sign of continued long-haul travel demand.

Traveltainment’s Bistro system is used by some 11,000 travel agencies in Germany to make package holiday bookings from 130 tour operators, while its Internet Booking Engine is used by more than 350 online travel agents and portals.
