EU funds Greek island and Cyprus enterprises

The new "Interreg" program aims to increase competitiveness by supporting entrepreneurship, fostering the use of information and communication technologies and assisting SMEs

A new EU supported program worth more than €54 million will assist 9 border regions in Greece and all of Cyprus further develop their local economies with measures that will create jobs, improve infrastructures and protect the environment.

The 10 regions involved in the Interreg V-A Greece-Cyprus are:

In Greece: The regions of Lesvos, Samos, Chios, Dodekanisos, Kyklades, Irakleio, Lasithi, Rethymno and Chania.

In Cyprus: the whole country.

The new “Interreg” program aims to increase competitiveness by supporting entrepreneurship, fostering the use of information and communication technologies and assisting SMEs. The program also focuses on how the regions can cooperate to mitigate and reverse the negative effects of climate change through investments in a low emission economy. Furthermore, it will contribute to environment protection: either through risk prevention or in terms of promotion of the areas’ natural and cultural heritage.

Active cooperation

Thanks to this program, active cooperation will bring many concrete advantages to people living in the border regions of Greece and Cyprus; new jobs, boosted research and innovation, preserved natural heritage, and cutting-edge technologies that improve people’s lives and offer new areas for regional growth,” Corina Crețu, Commissioner for Regional Policy commented.

The fifth programming period of Interreg for 2014-2020 has a total budget of EUR 10.1 billion invested in over 100 cooperation programs between regions and territorial, social and economic partners. This budget also includes the ERDF allocation for Member States to participate in EU external border cooperation programs supported by other instruments,  such as the Instrument for Pre-Accession and European Neighborhood Instrument).
