German expert advice on Greek tourism

The president of the Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry (BTW) Dr. Michael Frenzel focused on Greece when he underlined the importance of preserving the European idea and the euro for the sake of the tourism industry.

During his address at the 2015 ITB Berlin opening ceremony, Dr. Frenzel made appeals that touched upon the future of tourism. One of his appeals regarded Europe and Greece.

“The tourism industry stands united in its support of a Europe with open borders and a single currency. And the tourism industry supports Greece as part of a Europe that is thus defined.”

He stressed that tourism benefits extensively from the European idea and from the euro and added that it must be preserved. “What is also clear is that all sides must be ready to compromise, including Greece. As hard as it may seem: nothing can or will work without at least some reforms and the will to make an own effort to turn the country around.”

He also said that tourism is the “ace” up Greece’s sleeve and added that in order for Greece to improve its position on the international market it must diversify, extend the tourist season, promote innovation, introduce new ideas and target new groups.

“Behind every successful tourist destination there is always a modern strategic plan,” he said, adding that Greece is a prime destination of choice for German travelers. Some 2.5 million German tourists came to Greece in 2014. He stressed, however, that for Greece to remain at the top, it must become competitive, which he said can be achieved by tuning in to the trends and customer needs while focusing on flexibility, variety of choice, value for money, diversification and specialization, taking into account environmental considerations.
