Greece and Egypt will step up and intensify efforts to agree on the delineation of their EEZs, with full respect for international law. Cyprus and Egypt have already delineated their EEZ boundaries, despite Turkish objections

Following trilateral talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiadis in Athens, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stated the talks reviewed regional energy developments, sparked by the recent discovery of Egypt’s huge Zohr hydrocarbon deposits, as well as the further development of Cyprus’ EEZ  blocs and the prospect of future pipelines passing through Greece.

After their meeting, the three leaders issued a joint declaration pledging to deepen trilateral cooperation on all fronts and to accelerate talks on delineating their adjacent Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) at sea.

Coordination and ties

The aim of the meeting was to upgrade the scale of coordination between the three and develop ties in energy, security and the economy, in an effort to promote peace and regional stability. Given the recent escalation of the conflicts in the grater region, the coordination between the three will have even greater value to the European Union and the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.

Strategically, there was agreement that Greece and Egypt will step up and intensify efforts to agree on the delineation of  their EEZs, with full respect for international law. Cyprus and Egypt have already delineated their EEZ boundaries, despite Turkish objections.

The three leaders agreed to establish a standing committee that will coordinate various levels of inter-state cooperation between the three countries’ foreign ministries. They also formed a joint committee that will review and enhance cooperation in shipping and the linking of their ports.

After accepting yet another trilateral summit next year, Al-Sisi projected that by then various joint initiatives will in progress, with projects in Egypt, and then Cyprus and Greece. He also added that the trilateral summit signals the three nations’ unswerving commitment to strategic cooperation in a wide scope of areas.

The Cypriot President, who also stressed that the trilateral cooperation is directed against no country, noted that Greece and Cyprus will effectively communicate Egyptian concerns in EU organs.
