Kalamata: Pact for European Capital of Culture

The Kalamata Municipality is preparing the city’s application for European Capital of Culture 2021.

The Kalamata Municipality agreed to sign a pact with CulturePolis in order to cooperate on the submission of the city’s application for European Capital of Culture 2021.

The two sides agreed to initiate a multilevel collaboration with emphasis on sustainable development, culture in the broadest sense, tourism, gastronomy, innovation, new technologies, education, training, and promotion of citizens’ society.

Common goals

During this phase, any form of financial transaction between the two parties is excluded, but both commit to help each other towards achieving common goals, through synergies, donations, funding, facilities and involvement in initiatives, policies and programs in Greece and abroad.

The aim of the agreement is to cover the following indicative points and constantly be updated to reflect new developments and ideas. These points of cooperation include:

a) Joint participation in partnerships for developing proposals and implementing projects in national, international and European projects such as Interreg – Cross-border Cooperation, Adriatic-Ionian, Balkans-Mediterranean, MED, Thematic EE programs 2014-2020: Creative Europe, ERASMUS + {Education, Training, Youth} Citizens of Europe, HORIZON 2020, COSME etc. and Greek interest projects included in the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF or ESPA in Greek) for 2014-2020

Exploitation of synergies

b) Collaboration on specific issues and initiatives, and exploitation of synergies and co-financing of all forms – especially from European and national projects, such as:

1) Kalamata: European Cultural Capital 2021. Co-organization with the Municipality of Kalamata and “residencies” support in 2016, in the context of the “Citizen Artist Incubator” project of CulturePolis, which was just adopted by the “Creative Europe” program for 2015-2017.

2) Sustainable management of cultural heritage. Kalamata Municipality Utilization of the results of the SUSTCULT project (2011-14), which was completed by the CulturePolis for the Old City of Corfu – a UNESCO Monument.

3) Innovative cultural-tourist applications in local government. “Cultural-Tourism Entrepreneurship Incubator” by CulturePolis for Kalamata.

4) Web platforms and toolkits. Utilization of CulturePolis platforms for communication, learning and citizen participation in decision-making. (Policy Innovation Platform project (2014-5) funded by Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Bothosaki Foundation.

5) Creation of CulturePolis. Cultural Antenna in Kalamata through the Municipality Cultural Organization based in the city but reaching geographically across all of Southwestern Peloponnese.

The anticipated duration of the pact is three years.
